I went to a meeting tonight about Alternative Teacher Certification. It will start in June, although I have already started the online class. We met for an hour and then they asked for all of the fine arts and performing arts to stay afterwards. There was an awesome grant given to DISD this year from the Wallace Foundation. It's 8 million dollars to improve the arts in elementary schools in DISD. Everyone in the meeting tonight has been accepted into the program although they told us we will have to go through another interview with the Fine Arts Department, that is, if they call us. This was new to everyone in the room except for one. One man had already been interviewed. This interview will determine if we will be put into the pool principals will choose from. We are to wait until Wednesday for a call and then email DISD if we don't. The Alternative Teacher staff said they would fight for us, but really its a basic yes or no, from the Fine Arts Department. If it is a no, then there is no reason to be in the program.
I went to this meeting excited about my summer and looking forward to teaching multiculural children in the fall. I've had thoughts of teaching them how to paint, making collages, teaching them about other nations, being creative all day and seeing kids excited about art. Now, I'm not so sure that will happen.
We have been asked to produce a digital portfolio so they can show the Fine Arts Department what we are all about. I have been working on it since I got home, and hope this will indeed show them how great of an art teacher i can be.
I will keep you posted!
